The biggest reason for delaying dental care is cost, according to a Consumer Reports survey that asked readers to describe the dental health and cosmetic treatments they received in the last five years.

Cost was cited as a barrier by 43 percent of readers who delayed care. The survey also reveals that only a third of readers are brushing and flossing when they should, and that some patients might be paying for treatments they don’t need.

Some examples of potentially unnecessary treatments are teeth whitening, amalgam filling replacement, unnecessary restorations, precautionary removal of wisdom teeth, X-rays and surgery for TMJ disorder.

The cost barrier
Seventeen percent of respondents who had a dental procedure for health reasons said they delayed it, notes the report. Even readers with insurance put off a treatment they needed; 23 percent did so because insurance wouldn’t cover the procedure, and 24 percent because they had already used up the maximum that their insurance plan would cover for the year. Having white teeth is a good thing. Everyone likes to sit across from someone with clean teeth. But is it just me, or are there an excessive number of teeth whitening products on the market?

Here’s the thing: I grew up being taught how to care for my teeth. When I was in elementary school (back before the earth cooled), dental-type people would come to school and teach us how to brush, and make us eat these little tablets that turned your mouth a funky color (I think blue was the color; it’s been a long time, because as I said, it was back before the earth cooled).

What I do remember is that we’d line up and spit blue spit into our little tiny elementary school sink and then smile. Whatever was left on our teeth illustrated where we’d missed brushing. First of all, the whole thing completely grossed me out. I never have, nor do I want to in the future, view my peers’ spit/dirty teeth. To this day it’s creepy to me.
