The Cardinals rallied from 20-6 down to beat Oregon 50-36 in the regional finals, then scored on their last five possessions to rally from five down in the final two minutes to edge Rock Falls 46-44 with 1.8 seconds left in the sectional final.

“The tougher the better,” 6-foot center Robyn Alde.

“How many pressure situations have we been in?” 5-10 forward Jessica Gerig said. “This team just has no quit.”

Eureka, which plays Stillman (25-6) tonight in the Class 2A Monmouth Supersectional with the winner advancing to the girls basketball state semifinals, knows all about playing teams that won’t quit. Eureka held a 14-point lead over No. 6-ranked Sherrard with less than three minutes left in its sectional final.

One local coach has started a business to help point area athletes in the right direction.

Gene Houston, the former Rock Valley College women’s basketball coach and an assistant for the men’s team, launched his new business and website, Maximum Potential Recruiting Services, two weeks ago.

“Ever since I stopped coaching I’ve been focusing on training and sports specific skill development,” Houston said.

“But I’m also fed up with some recruiters telling kids, ‘Hey, I’ll get you a D-I scholarship,’ when that’s not the level they should be playing at. This will give them the assistance they need.”

Like many other recruiting services, MPRS will help young athletes put together a recruitment portfolio. But Houston goes much further. He also offers an ACT prep class, financial aid completion assistance, clearinghouse completion assistance as well as individualized nutrition and training plans.

Whitney Houston made three visits to the doctor in the week prior to her death, but the trips had NO illicit purpose — she had a sore throat and got her teeth whitened.

Both family and law enforcement sources tell TMZ … Whitney was recording the title track to “Sparkle” and got a sore throat … so she went to a doctor to get it checked out. We’re told the doctor gave Whitney an Rx for Amoxicillin.   

Whitney was also scheduled to film a commercial for her sister-in-law’s candle line, so she went to a dentist twice to get her teeth whitened and cleaned.

And law enforcement sources have reiterated to TMZ … Whitney was NOT doctor shopping for prescriptions and they believe none of the doctors crossed the line in their treatment of her.

Do-it-yourself teeth whiteners with high levels of peroxide can cause painful chemical burns.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) recently recalled a number of do-it-yourself (DIY) teeth whiteners containing unsafe concentrations of peroxide that can cause painful chemical burns, blisters and ulceration of the gums, mouth and throat.

Consumers should be extremely cautious when using DIY teeth-whiteners, the ACCC warned, and check the product doesn’t exceed safe levels of bleaching agents (more than 6% hydrogen peroxide and 18% carbamide peroxide).
