Avoid eating acidic food like soft drinks, soda and citrus fruits in excess to prevent your teeth from decay.

Steering clear of sports and energy drinks could be all it takes to keep the pearly whites clean and avoid having to pay for an expensive tooth whitening treatment, suggests a new dentistry study.

In the May/June issue of General Dentistry, authors noted that the increased consumption of

sugary sport and energy drinks is causing irreversible damage to teeth, specifically on the tooth enamel or the glossy outer layer of the tooth.

The finding applies particularly to teens, the authors say, who are the main guzzlers of such products: between 30 to 50 percent of US teens down energy drinks, while up to 62 percent consume at least one sports drink a day.

In addition to the high sugar content, the high acidity levels in the drinks were found to cause erosion of the tooth enamel — “essentially bathing” the teeth in acid.

The Australian Dental Industry Association is assisting suppliers of quality dental products to understand the safety requirements for the supply of teeth whitening products.

The action follows clarification by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission of the concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide that can be safely supplied in kits to consumers.

Wilton Police Looking for Alleged Teeth-Whitening Strip Thieves

Police are searching for a male and a female who entered Wilton CVS late last Thursday night, 4/19, and allegedly stole $ 902 worth of Crest Whitening Strips and Prilosec, anover-the-counter anti-heartburn medication, from the store’s shelf, according to police reports.

The two then came back three days later on  Sunday at 2 p.m., allegedly to check out the same shelf for more of the same items, but the items were not in stock and the pair “left without taking anything,” according to police reports. Pictures captured from in-store security cameras show what looks like a middle aged male and female entering the store and were wearing the same clothing as they had during the first larceny, police reports state.

The duo left in what is described as a black four-door Acura TL with 5-star, double-spoked rims with no front license plate, reports state.

Those with any useful information are asked to contact Officer Eva Zimnoch or Detective Peter Trahan at the Wilton Police Department by calling 203-834-6260.

Anna Phillips is a busy young professional and wanted to put best her foot forward at her cousins wedding.

Everyone would be there and she wanted the day to be perfect.

“So after the rehearsal dinner I came home, popped my whitening strips in and fell asleep and woke up the day of the wedding with throbbing teeth and gums,” Anna recalled.

Dentist Warns Against Home Whitening Kit Overuse

IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) – Anna Phillips of Irving admits to craving a brighter, whiter smile.

“You just look well-kept and it just helps your overall appearance,” she says.

So, along with regular brushing, Phillips tried a do-it-yourself home teeth whitener, thinking that anything bought at the store must be safe.

“They’re not necessarily ‘unsafe’,” says Dallas Dentist Clark Steffens with Floss Dental, “but, they can be if used improperly.”

And Steffens says patients often can’t resist the urge to ‘over bleach.’ After all, says Philips, “couldn’t longer make it whiter?”

Well, she soon learned, longer can certainly make it more painful.

In spite of having flaunted the package instructions in the past, Phillips was in for quite a surprise when she fell asleep during a treatment.

“So I wake up the next morning with the strips still on my teeth… and my teeth are throbbing,” she said. “I’ve never had a cavity or anything like that, so that was probably the worst pain I’d ever felt in my mouth before.”
