What city officials believe was a deliberate act of vandalism has caused significant damage to a monument sign at a key entrance to downtown Brentwood days before the opening ceremony for the new Civic Center on Saturday.

“There was no accident,” Kwame Reed, Brentwood senior community development analyst, said of the damage over the weekend to the sign at Brentwood Boulevard and Second Street. “This is the most deliberate one (act of vandalism) that I have seen.”

By Tuesday morning, Reed noted that much of the significant damage was patched up, including the sign’s stone veneers. The fabricators who crafted the metal artwork portions of the sign will come out next week to fix the bent metal pieces, including some of the letters in “Downtown Brentwood.”

“We tried to clean it up as best as we could,” Reed said.

ZURICH (Reuters) – Swiss dental implant maker Straumann Holding AG (STMN.S) is to buy a 49 percent stake in Brazil’s Neodent for 260 million Swiss francs ($ 276.57 million) to expand in the fast-growing emerging economy and compensate for weakness in European markets.

The Swiss group is banking on growth in Asia and Latin America to offset sluggish demand for cosmetic dental products in Europe, where unemployment is high and many countries are in recession.
