Although more and more people are
turning to cosmetic dentistry in this day and age, many
of these same men and women literally cringe when they
hear the word "braces." With that is mind,
you need to understand that there have been some remarkable
advances made in regard to braces and cosmetic dentistry
that involves the use of braces.
In this brief article you will be
provided with an overview of information about cosmetic
dentistry and the role braces can play in bettering
your own smile.
How Braces Work
Braces are used to straighten a person’s teeth. They
actually move the patient’s teeth over a period of time.
They use brackets that are attached to each tooth. These
brackets are attached to each other by arch wires that
are tightened and are what actually adjusts and moves
the teeth. The braces apply constant pressure to the
teeth, which moves them over time. Sometimes rubber
bands or springs are also used to apply extra pressure
on the teeth. Braces are also used in bone remodeling.
As the braces apply pressure to the teeth, they are
moved in the bone. The bone then fills in to take up
the space.
Types of Braces
There are several different types
of braces other than the traditional metal ones. They
also come in various colors. Other types of braces include
the Invisalign, clear braces and lingual braces. Invisalign,
or clear aligners, are clear, removable mouthpieces
that are barely detectable. They are removed to eat,
drink, brush and floss. Clear braces are like the metal
braces, but they are clear and are nearly invisible.
They work the same way as traditional metal braces without
the “metal mouth” look. Lingual braces fit on the backside
of the teeth. They cannot be seen at all, however, they
do take a little longer for the patient to adjust to
the feel inside their mouth.
