When Should You Start
-- Children and Teenagers
Because your child
changes physically very drastically over a short period
of time, you really will want to put off obtaining orthodontic
care for a child or teenager until he or she reaches
a point in time when there is some degree of physical
stability. You will not want to put braces on a child
until all of his or her adult teeth are present in his
or her mouth. Proceeding at an earlier point in time
makes no sense.
At the other extreme,
you will want to make certain to obtain orthodontic
intervention at a point in time before a child’s dental
condition worsens to a point that it becomes significantly
problematic.
The best course for
you to take is to consult with a qualified, reputable
and experienced orthodontist early on and map out the
timing of orthodontic care for a particular child.
When Should You Start -- Adults
When it comes to obtaining
orthodontic care for an adult, there really is not definite
timeline that comes into play. Rather, an adult should
consider orthodontic care only when he or she has some
extra time on his or her schedule.
When it comes to cosmetic
dentistry, including orthodontic care for adults, you
need to keep in mind that it requires a financial and
time commitment on your part. You have to have the time
available to attend to appointments and other responsibilities
that naturally are associated with orthodontic care
at this point in time.
